Chapter Fourteen

The faint smell of blood lingered in the air, enticing me, but not enough to slow me down. The front of the hotel felt like a zoo. Between the police, reporters, and nosy pedestrians, the place was a madhouse.

Luckily, I didn’t see Officer Garza, and slipped into the hotel and up to my room without being interrogated again. Though the plaguing thought that a fourth incident had happened within my vicinity made me wonder if I had been responsible. I just didn’t know how.

Once in my room, my sigh of relief to be in my own space withered away as soon as I crossed the threshold.

“What are you doing here?”

The wicked grin he sent my way caused my stomach to clench down low. And lower still. His smile only widened as I fought the urge to shift from side to side. Damn him!

He lay stretched out on my bed, head propped up on one hand facing me. My gaze unwillingly slipped over him, starting at his bare feet and moving up slowly. He wore gray dress pants and a white shirt halfway unbuttoned, showing off the smooth skin on his chest… My gaze fastened on that bit of skin and stuck.

The clearing of his throat surprised me, causing my wide eyes to snap to his. The amusement that crinkled the skin at the corners of his eyes brought me back to reality, and sent my thoughts spiraling.

I had experienced lust in the past, but only in a basic, scratch an itch sort of sense. In two hundred years, no one had made me as aroused, or confused. But the kicker was—it hadn’t been just Xavier to cause my insides to warm and my heart to pound. Nor just Cyrus. But both of them. Two men I’d only known for all of two days; both had my insides twisting and turning. And bedding either of them seemed like a bad idea. So where did that leave me? Hot and too damn bothered to deal with Xavier’s shit tonight.

“Like what you see?” he asked just as my anger had spiked.

“I expected a better line from you,” I said with pursed lips. Not caring if he had a comeback or not, I continued, “I asked why you’re here, but I don’t really want to know. And I don’t want you here. Please leave.”

His chuckle, soft and deep, reminded me of silk sheets and warm bodies sliding against one another. I held back a shiver and scowled.

“Come now, Kassandra. That’s no way to greet an old friend.” As graceful as a cat, he stretched, arching his long body before sitting up on the bed and swinging his feet to the floor.

Frowning, I said, “Old friend? We just met this week.”

His only reply was to shrug one shoulder. Then he changed the subject. “I heard about the bodies.”

I stared at him, unblinking. “So?” When his gaze continued to bore into mine without an answer, my teeth ground together. “You think I had something to do with those murders?” He still didn’t answer, and the intensity in his eyes unnerved me.
